Scissor Case

Inspired by The Gift of Stitching August 2008 Issue 31

Scrap quilting cotton
Stiff polyester felt sheet
Cotton thread
Crochet thread (size 10?)

I created a copy of the embroidery pattern on an excel spreadsheet and printed a few copies until I got the size I needed. Cut the cotton fabric at 1/2 inch seam allowance. Cut the felt at the exact size of the pattern. The original called for skirtex/buckrim but I didn't have any so I cut the cotton fabric and felt with same allowances as if it were the skirtex. I ironed the cotton down around the cotton pattern cutout, sides/ends first and then corners. Pin the cotton to the felt at the corners. Whipstitch around all the sides except the very bottom, leave the excess thread hanging but knotted. Whipstitch around the faux skirtex fully. Slide in the "skirtex" to the end slipstitch in either end and stitch up both sides together. Using a cording tool I made a cord with the crochet cotton. Using the snips/scissors measure best placement and stitch down the cord. Finished.

Hussif

So I was recently enjoyed watching some Cocovid Costubing videos on YouTube and came across a wonderful little sewing accessory. The Hussif or Housewife. I had to make one. Then I thought about how handy they will be and there may be a series of them, maybe not all hand-sewn but definitely made. These are an 18th century device and I play in the SCA which is very much pre-seventeenth century but that isn't going to stop me from making such a wonderfully useful device.

I went through all the scraps from my recent fabric shopping for mask making. I have many more masks to make but I needed a mental break. So I hand-sewed this fabulous little accessory. Now to fill it. I may have to make one for my veil pins and jewelry too!

You can get the pattern here: 18th Century Housewife Pattern Digital pattern

You can also get beautiful little kits here: 18th Century Housewife "Hussif" Kit

Edit: It would seem I wasn't clear what a Hussif/Housewife is above. These are filled with sewing notions or really any notion you want to carry and secure. It can be a jewelry roll, a wallet, a sewing kit, the options are endless.

Time to start anew

I am going to try and document here my completed sewing and craft projects. I am going to go backwards as well as forward. If there is documentation that I used, I will include that as well.

We will see if this is the place to log these things or if it is time to archive the blog and say goodbye.
